Daedelus, Free The Robots, Mono/Poly, Connah Jay

December 18, 2017 - 9:00pm

On Monday, December 18, the Community Center for the Performing Arts and University of Oregon Campus Radio 88.1 FM KWVA proudly welcome Daedelus’ The Antidote Tour to the WOW Hall with special guests Free the Robots and Mono/Poly.  Eugene's own Connah Jay will open the show.

Alfred Darlington, better known as Daedelus, is an influential Los Angeles producer and cornerstone of the electronic and beat music scenes both locally and internationally. Over the last 15 years, he has released a number of full-lengths, EPs and remixes on labels like Ninja Tune, Anticon, and Brainfeeder, including the collaborative 2015 release Kneebody Kneedelus

Last October Daedelus released his latest full-length, Labyrinths, on his own label, Magical Properties, marking the first time Daedelus has released an LP on his imprint. The album features guest appearances from Seven Davis Jr, Vōx, Amir Yaghmai, Zeroh, longtime collaborator Busdriver, and wife Laura Darlington.  Guest musicians include Teebs, Goodnight Cody, and the Voidz drummer Alex Carapetis.

Twisting, complex, and rhizomatic - Daedelus unfurls a maze of genre on Labyrinths, juxtaposing disparate influences while maintaining an underlying love and appreciation for all styles.  The record serves as a response and critique of the current state of EDM, in which Daedelus attempts to answer his own questions with style rather than cynicism using the labyrinth metaphor.

With the LP coming out on his own label, Daedelus now wields the power to wind through the maze on his terms, sharing music and further developing the Magical Properties platform.  Like his mythological namesake, Daedelus is a creator of sonic labyrinths combining sounds from an eclectic palette into an innovative genre all his own.  His music runs the gamut of emotion, alternately intense and mellow, exuberant and melancholy, danceable and introspective.

Daedelus has performed over a thousand shows for audiences on five continents, everywhere from Iceland to Istanbul.  Each live show is unique, employing Monome controllers and open-source software that allows for on-the-fly improvisation.  The backdrop onstage is Daedelus' collaborative invention Archimedes, a robotic array of moving mirrors that reacts to and reflects the performance.

Chris Alfaro is Free the Robots.  The genre-defying artist pulls together heavy doses of traditional jazz, psych, electronic and hip-hop, with progressive melodies and devastating drums into a rich pot of sound.  His techniques create harmony between genres with the blending of obscure samples with analog and digital compositions.

Based out of Santa Ana, CA, Free The Robots started as a side project by Alfaro in 2003 while also playing with different bands, producing MCs and DJing. Having worked with so many different styles of music, Free the Robots brought everything together under one roof, allowing further exploration.  With the use of samples, controllers and other live instruments, Alfaro creates a balance between the sounds of the past, present and future.  His open-ended imagination and tendency to break free from any boundaries keeps a steady flow of ideas running through his head, constantly moving him forward; away from robotic monotony, ultimately freeing the robots.

Free the Robots has spent over a decade taking his craft to audiences around the globe.  Known as one of the pioneering artists to come out of LA's beat movement, he continues on building his line up of original recordings in directions still unknown.  The energy and technical skill behind his live performances have landed him among the greats, sharing stages with the likes of Dj Shadow, Prefuse 73, Flying Lotus, to Afrika Bambaataa, The Glitch Mob and more.

In defying the laws of tradition, Los Angeles based music producer Mono/Poly has managed to outstrip the logics of multi-genre producing.  Known for his distinct madness of face melting bass, paired with his dreamy astral soundscapes of glitch-based hip-hop, Mono/Poly has proved himself to be a natural phenomenon.

Mono/Poly appears on releases from Warp records and Planet Mu, featured alongside fellow artists Flying Lotus, Thundercat, Daedelus, and Nosaj Thing.  His gravitational attraction to revolutionary sounds has gained vast recognition among listeners and artists as one of the hottest up-and-coming producers in the world. He started 2015 with a featured track on the new Grand Theft Auto 5, the release of Ne-Yo's 'Religious', and 'Skip Skip' by Tha Dogg Pound & Snoop Dogg.

2017 has been a busy year for Mono/Poly with a recently released remix on Noisia’s newest album Outer Edges: Remixes, as well as working on Thundercat’s newest album Drunk, Kendrick Lamar’s latest DAMN. and releasing the Union EP with London vocalist Alyss in July.  He continues to perform his live sets across the globe, having covered places such as Greece, Switzerland, France and Lithuania, in addition to his touring in the US.

Tickets are $15 in advance, $18 day of show.  Doors open at 8:00 pm and showtime is 9:00.
