SZA with Smino and Ravyn Lenae-SOLD OUT!

September 13, 2017 - 9:00pm

On Wednesday, September 13, the Community Center for the Performing Arts and TDE Presents proudly welcomes SZA’s Ctrl Tour to the WOW Hall with special guests Smino and Ravyn Lenae. This show is sold out.

Known as SZA, alternative R&B artist Solana Rowe grew up listening to classic and avant-garde jazz ranging from Billie Holiday to John Coltrane, alternative artists including Björk, and rap, most notably Wu-Tang Clan, whose RZA inspired her performing name.

During 2012 and 2013, SZA released her first two EPs, See.SZA.Run and S, which formed a dreamy, alluring and occasionally unorthodox introduction. Rowe subsequently signed to Top Dawg, home to the likes of Kendrick Lamar and Ab-Soul.

A fantasy-like video for the S EP's "Ice Moon" was released in November 2013, and additional exposure came shortly thereafter through "His & Her Friend”, off labelmate ScHoolboy Q's Oxymoron.

The digital-only Z, a trippy ten-track set with assists from Lamar, Chance the Rapper and Isaiah Rashad, arrived in April 2014 and entered the Billboard 200 at number 39.  Appearances on a string of well over a dozen tracks -- Travis Scott's "OK Alright”, Rihanna's "Consideration” and Lamar's "Untitled 04 | 08.14.2014" among them -- followed in 2015 and 2016.

Signed to major-label RCA, Rowe released Ctrl in June 2017, featuring collaborations with Pharrell Williams, Terrace Martin, and Frank Dukes.

Smino describes his sound as futuristic funk and soulful rap.  He grew up listening to a lot of jazz, Gospel, and hip-hop.  Smino names Kanye West as his biggest influence, as well as his cousin, Drea Smith, who was signed to Lupe Fiasco and toured with Kanye West.  Smino is part of a musical collective called "Zero Fatigue" with producer Monte Booker, and artists Jay2, Bari and Ravyn Lenae.  Smino released his first two EPs, S!Ck S!Ck S!Ck and Blkjuptr, in 2015.

Smino’s debut album, blkswn, was released on March 14, 2017. The release date holds a special significance to the St. Louis rapper because 314 is the area code of his hometown.  The album includes guest appearances from Ravyn Lenae, Bari, theMIND, Jay2, Via Rosa, Drea Smith, and Akenya, with production coming from Monte Booker, THEMpeople, Sango, Phoelix, and J. Bird.

Following the album's release, Smino headlined in his month-long Swanita Tour, which included 22 dates with guests Monte Booker, Jay2, Bari, and Jean Deaux.

Ravyn Lenae is touring in support of her new Midnight Moonlight EP.  It’s hard to believe that someone so young could be bursting with so much talent; but at 17 years old, the classically trained singer/songwriter is taking the music world by storm with her inimitable style, which seamlessly melds elements of R&B, electronic, soul and hip-hop.  As Pitchfork declared, “She roars. She soars. She has the right.”

Born and raised on Chicago’s often-turbulent south side, Lenae is part of the “Zero Fatigue” collective.  In early 2015, Lenae released her single, “Greetings,” which quickly became a household favorite in the Chicago area and beyond.  Soon after, she signed with renowned Chicago-based record label, Three Twenty Three Music Group.

In August of 2015, Lenae soft released her highly acclaimed debut EP, Moon Shoes, which has well over two million plays on SoundCloud.  She was named Verizon’s Big Break Artist on WGCI in Chicago, as well as one of BBC Radio’s New Names of 2016.  Lenae has performed all over the country, including headlining appearances at Chicago’s African Fest and at House of Blues Chicago.

Given her remarkable ability to blend genres, it’s no surprise that Lenae has been influenced by a wide variety of artists, from Stereolab and Outkast to Bob Marley and Ella Fitzgerald. “I tend to take small bits and pieces from my favorite artist, and incorporate them into my own work,” she says.

Doors open at 8:00 pm and showtime is 9:00.
