Mike Love with Cas Haley

May 10, 2018 - 8:00pm

On Thursday, May 10, the Community Center for the Performing Arts and University of Oregon Campus Radio 88.1 FM KWVA proudly welcome Mike Love’s “The Great Remembering” Tour to the WOW Hall along with special guest Cas Haley.

With a foundation rooted in the spirituality and message-based music of reggae and Rastafari, Mike Love blends the sounds of progressive and classic rock, pop, R&B, soul, blues, flamenco, jazz and so much more.

Healing is at the core of his music.  With ever evolving live performances, Love keeps his fans returning again and again to witness the evolution of tried and true favorites, and the repertoire of new music that is constantly surfacing.  Born and raised on the island of O'ahu, Hawai'i, Love was brought up in an environment of music and inspiring natural landscapes.  Forging a deep connection with nature, his message of returning to a more natural and spiritually grounded way of living was solidified at an early age.

With the guidance of his father and grandfather, both composers, as well as his steel pan instructor Frank Leto and piano teacher Beth Uale, Mike's natural musical instincts towards melody and harmony were shaped and deepened.  He started playing the guitar at age 15 and played in multiple bands including Melodious Solutions (with Brad Watanabe of The Green) and the 10-piece band Dubkonscious, entering into his first studio experience as producer  on the band's album At the Foot of the Mountain.

In 2008, he started a solo weekly residence, performing at a local Irish pub on Mondays.  During his long four-hour sets there, he developed a unique one-man-band style, using looping, multiple instruments and an array of different vocal techniques and musical styles.

In December of 2012, Love released his first solo album, the critically acclaimed The Change I'm Seeking -- with instant classics like "Permanent Holiday", "Barbershop", and "Human Race".  His fanbase grew worldwide with the success of a handful of viral videos on YouTube.  Love delved into passionate subjects on the album, with tracks like "Earthlings") exhibiting his desire to "Veganize" the world and wake people up to the injustices of animal cruelty) and "No More War".

National and international touring soon followed, with warm and enthusiastic receptions across Europe, Central America, Australia, Polynesia and more. Throughout it all, Love has remained humble, citing the healing power of the music that comes from a larger place as the sole reason this all has been possible.

With the release of his second album Love Will Find a Way and follow-up companion album Love Overflowing -- featuring sing-along tunes like "I Love You" and "No Regrets", he solidified the bond with his fans and exhibited the evolution that lovers of his music had come to expect.  Returning to the studio with road-tested material had obviously resulted in a more refined and focused sound and ideology.

Currently, Mike has formed a super-band, hand-picked from all of the top musicians he's worked with over the years, dubbed aptly, Mike Love and the Full Circle.  They have honed their skills and come together as a tight unit at home on O'ahu and have now begun to tour, taking Love's music to even greater heights.  As they prepare to return to the studio in 2018, we can anticipate that the new album they are concocting will be the most dynamic, heartfelt and spirited offering yet.

Says Mike, “The Great Remembering Tour has begun ‘ohana!  We’ve already enjoyed love-filled shows at home and at Envision Festival in Costa Rica and had some wild shows in Texas.  We’re rolling on with the wind at our backs, overjoyed by the support and response we’ve been getting from you.  The reflection of the evolution of Jah music continues to keep us excited to hit the stage and call in that precious healing energy we all need so much in these times.

“There’s no doubt that the ice caps are melting, the seas are rising, the weather is out of control.  Politicians increasingly seem like puppets or cartoon characters in a script that’s stranger than fiction.  Police brutality, hate crimes, school shootings, our media outlets and social media feeds seem to be inundated with such a devastating amount of sadness, fear and division.  However, through this music, through the ‘ohana it attracts, we see hope, we find hope.  We see communities coming together out of the ashes, we see bonds created through revolution, out of necessity.

“No more can we feign ignorance, can we turn a blind eye to the human suffering, the suffering of all creatures and of our beautiful Mother Earth.  This is the foundation of The Great Remembering.  It is a reuniting of the Great Spirit we all belong to, a reconnection of energy that we have been led away from for many lifetimes.  It is a remembering that every action has a reaction and that the repercussions of the choices that we make, positive or negative, will be inherited by our children.

“We give thanks for the blessing, for the responsibility of carrying this music and this message.  We hope to see you soon in your town.”
