Kehlani, Ella, Mai, Jahkoy, Noodles -- SOLD OUT
By Maya Vagner
On Friday, April 28, the Community Center for the Performing Arts proudly welcomes Kehlani to the WOW Hall along with special guests Ella Mai, Jahkoy and Noodles.
Kehlani Parrish, is a R&B/Soul Singer/Dancer founded her career in 2009. Originally from Oakland, California, she is now signed to Atlantic Records.
Let me just start by saying that she is an inspiration to us all. She is not afraid to tell it like it is and make you feel. So here is a quick recap about her past and present.
It all started from when Kehlani achieved initial fame as a member of the teen pop group Poplyfe. She also made it as far as 4th place finalist on America's Got Talent. However, after that she went her own path. She was homeless for a while, crashing on other peoples couches, and didn't want to pick up the mic in the scare of getting sued by the teen pop group. As she finally gained more courage, Nick Cannon hooked her up with an apartment in LA and some studio time. She released her first mixtape, Cloud 19, in 2014. Which was so good but unfortunately overlooked. The album was listed among Complex's 50 Best Albums of 2014.
Kehlani was recently featured in the Suicide Squad Soundtrack with the song "Gangster", which got a lot of recognition. But in my opinion not as much as her album, Sweetsexysalvage, which came out in 2017 and where I think she really shines.
Earlier in 2016 when I found out Kehlani was booked for performing, I was freaking out along with my besties because she literally has songs that my friend group can relate to. Like for example the song "Personal"; Kehlani talks about not taking things personal. For me that is a real struggle in my life but she taught me not too because it has nothing to do with you. In this song she definitely felt like she could speak her mind about her experience leaving Poplyfe, her homelessness, and about her ex.
“I am one-hundred percent music,” she’ll assure. That’s because it’s the truth. If you ever had to face challenges in your life you will relate to her music. Like recently I went through a heart breaking breakup and I remember relating to the song "Thank You". It talked about how she is thankful for her experiences and her support from her love ones. Which at the time I needed to hear that someone else had support through hard times as well.
I'm not one to usually go head over heels for an artist but this one just takes the cake. All tickets are sold out for this performance but I recommend you listen to Kehlani on iTunes, CD or record and you are sure to be blown away.
For those of you who got tickets -- you are certain to enjoy this concert! Be here right when the doors open at 8:00 pm to get up close. Showtime is 9:00.
